Osborn Prioritizes Truck Driver Safety and Benefits

Truck drivers are the most valuable assets a trucking company has. According to the U.S. Census, more than 3.5 million people work as truck drivers. An occupation that doesn’t come without risk. Operating an 18-wheel vehicle requires truck driver safety training, but it is not a one-course solution. The following are tips and reminders to keep truck driver safety top of mind.

Truck Driver Safety Training

Regular truck driver safety training can give seasoned drivers a refresh and provide an opportunity to stay updated on trucking policies. For new drivers, it equips them with the skills and knowledge to handle the unexpected on the road. Everyone can benefit from returning to the basics: checking your blind spots, driving at a safe speed, maintaining safe vehicle distance, and always using your signal.

Proper Loading and Unloading

Answering how to be a safe truck driver is more than what happens behind the wheel. Whether or not you’re loading your truck, before setting off on your route, ensuring it’s secure should be part of your pre-trip inspection. Unsecured cargo can move during the drive resulting in an imbalance from the undistributed weight. For unloading, if you can’t get to a safe space to begin the process, lay out cones that signal people to go around and provide a safe distance for you to get the job done.

Take a 15-20 Minute Break When You’re Out on the Road

Driving takes a toll on your mind and body. Taking bathroom breaks and eating proper meals are also part of truck driver safety. A 15-minute break can help you meet your miles faster. It seems counterintuitive, but according to Mental Health America, taking time for yourself for just 15 minutes reduces stress and achieves a better mood.
