5 Summer Driving Tips for Truck Drivers from Osborn

Winter weather conditions aren’t the only time to prioritize safety. Driving in hot weather can be just as dangerous. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a high volume of traffic during summer months increases truck driver fatalities. For driver protection, we’ve put together the following tips for staying safe and cool on the road.

#1 Ensure You’re AC is Working Well

As part of obtaining a CDL-A license, all drivers know how to conduct a pre-trip inspection and know its importance can save time by catching a breakdown or problem before it occurs. One of the boxes to tick during inspection is examining the air conditioning unit. If it’s not working well or at all, a different truck should be obtained for your route. While driving in the summer, the temperature of a vehicle can skyrocket to 125 degrees in a matter of minutes.

#2 Hydrate and Stay Alert

In high-temperature heat, water isn’t enough driver protection. Bringing electrolyte powders or opting for a drink containing electrolytes at truck stops can help you avoid dehydration. Staying hydrated and eating healthy will help you avoid feeling sluggish and will help you stay awake. According to the sleep doctor, UV exposure can trigger our body’s immune response as we try to regulate our temperature. As your body works hard to stay cool, you’ll get tired faster affecting your ability to stay alert on the road.

#3 Protect Yourself from the Sun

Driving in the summer also means sun protection. Sunglasses and sunscreen should be worn for every route. The truck cab does not provide driver protection from the sun. If you don’t wear sunglasses and you’re straining your eyes against the sun, you’ll find yourself tired more quickly. This brings us back to staying alert, see summer driving tip #2.

#4 Pay Attention to Weather Forecasts

Driving in the summer isn’t just about the high temperatures – it can mean thunderstorms with a downpour that makes it hard to see. Put your safety first and stop if needed. Always check the weather forecast to plan your route accordingly.
